Our protagonist, John Plunkett—an undertaker in his early 60s—is compelled to review his life upon the return of his estranged daughter, Mary. Ultimately, the play centers on themes of humanity and intimacy.

Mark, the young man John hired to assist him in the funeral business, stands as a kind of surrogate son. As a young man whose life lies ahead of him, Mark serves as a reminder of what life could have offered John, and what John’s life—sullied by drink and selfishness—refused.
