Synopsis:

This hilarious Broadway comedy brings together two very different worlds—and a family that’s about to collide! A successful New York art-dealer couple enjoys a comfortable life until the wife’s strait-laced sister and her uptight CPA husband arrive on the scene. Then their irrepressible Jewish mother moves in, turning everyone’s lives upside-down. When Grandma unexpectedly falls for an elderly minimalist artist—the couple’s most important client—the family’s carefully ordered world takes an uproarious turn. With sharp wit, irresistible characters, and plenty of surprises, Social Security is ultimately a warm, funny celebration of family, love, second chances, and the possibility of reinvention at any age.

 

Characters:

1) David Kahn: A sophisticated, trendy Manhattan art dealer. He loves his upscale, peaceful lifestyle and is initially deeply resistant to having his mother-in-law stay in his apartment.

2) Barbara Kahn: David’s wife and business partner at their art gallery. She is chic and modern, caught directly in the middle of her dramatic family dynamics when her sister dumps their mother on her doorstep.

3) Trudy Heyman: Barbara’s overly anxious, uptight suburban sister. She is deeply stressed by her daughter's behavior and uses it as an excuse to offload her mother.

4) Martin Heyman: Trudy’s strait-laced, intensely conventional accountant husband. He shares Trudy's suburban anxieties and rigid mindset.

5) Sophie Greengard: Barbara and Trudy’s elderly, sharp-tongued, and fiercely independent mother. She starts the play as a grumpy, difficult houseguest but undergoes a radical, glamorous transformation.

6) Maurice Koenig: A legendary, eccentric, and charming 86-year-old minimalist artist. He is a valued client of David and Barbara who falls for Sophie and completely revitalizes her outlook on life.
